RANDOM START: SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE - ROSES IN WATER

I couldn't have asked for a better first Random Start than Sunny Day. I should come out and say that this segment is not originally my idea. I was reading through Riley Breckenridge of Thrice's blog, and stumbled upon this segment that he does. Basically the idea is to hit shuffle on iTunes and write about the first song that comes up. It's a nice way to start off my mornings just right.

What can I really say about Sunny Day Real Estate that people don't already know? They have probably the best rhythm section in rock during this era. Good enough for Dave Grohl to ask them to join him in the Foo Fighters later on. This song is up there as one of my favorites by them, it really encompasses the band overall. I never was able to see them a few years back when they did their Reunion tour, but I believe people when they say it was nothing short of incredible.

7 QUESTIONS WITH EVAN WEISS (INTO IT OVER IT, SAOTW, PET SYMMETRY, T/T/T)

I met Evan a over a year ago when we did the Glamour Kills tour with him. At that time he was doing his thing on acoustic, but since then Into It Over It has done some full band tours. Always loved his records and his guitar playing, very intricate and precise. Evan and I both have custom telecaster handmade by my good friend Chris at JR Custom Guitars. I turned Evan onto them when mine was finished he got immediately got one made by Chris.  http://intoitoverit.com What is your current setup? (Guitars, bass, amps, pedals, strings, picks, etc...) Depends on which band we are talking about! For IIOI / SAOTW, I use two custom "Telecaster" guitars through a modded Sovtek Mig100 and ported Ampeg V2 guitar cab. There is a similar setup for Josh who also plays in IIOI, with a Sovtek Mig100B and second ported V2. I only use a tuner. These are setups that are unique but sound outrageous. I like having something one of a kind and weird. Not to mention symme...

RECORDS REVISITED: SUGAR - BEASTER (1993)

Recently I stopped by one of my favorite record stores just to browse around and kill some time. Whenever I go in with a plan to find a gem, or something specific that I have been wanting I never end up finding anything. So, I thought that I would better my luck by going into Angry Mom Records in search of nothing. After pondering through stacks of used and new records this record just popped right up was immediately brushed aside for no one else to grab. At a first glance I thought that maybe I had just found a reissue as many of their albums from their discography have been repressed lately. But, this wasn't. In fact it was an original press on UK label Creation Records.  I was shocked at my find, and even more stunned by the price tag of nine dollars. I did what any record nerd would do and look at the condition and the insert to see if maybe it was a bootleg, and much to my luck it wasn't. I don't look for records simply based on what they are potentially worth o...

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - TROY VAN LEEUWIN'S RIG RUNDOWN

Premier Guitar just recently put together a Rig Rundown of Troy Van Leeuwen's guitar rig. Troy is a huge part of their sound a very influential guitarist. He's one of my personal favorites. His unique style has been a very integral part of the band's sound since he joined the band. Not only does he play guitar but he also uses a lapsteel in a non traditional sense for noises and other effects, as well as percussion. Unlike Troy, Josh Homme is never one to publicly talk about what he uses on stage. Troy's rig consists of three main guitars - an Echopark T- style, his signature Fender Jazzmaster with a Mastery Bridge, and a Burns 12 string (not shown.) He plays through two Vox AC30s, a combo and a head driving Vox and Marshall cabs. Effects: Van Leeuwen's main QOTSA pedalboard has a Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro MIDI controller, a Custom Audio Electronics tap-tempo switch (for his Axe-Fx II, which is primarily used for reverb and delay), a Mo...
