WEEKLY DIG: CAVE IN - INFLATABLE DREAM

So, for this weeks dig I'm pulling out a rare and unreleased Cave In song, Inflatable Dream. I hate being that guy but I would have to say that this is my favorite Cave In song.  I believe this song was recorded around the Creative Eclipses EP sessions. These guys are a band that has covered many genres in their time together. From the metalcore masterpiece Until Your Heart Stops, to the major label alt rock debut, Antenna. You can find all of those elements that they are known for in this song. If you ask any Cave In fan, they will probably tell you that this is their favorite song as well.

This song starts off with a very eerie melody, backed up by a clicking guitar noise to fill in the void (almost like he is taping the guitar pots with his fingers). Just as you think it will build off of that, they hit right in with fast, laser gun guitar riffs, and pummeling drums. Thats right...laser, phaser guns. I remember reading an old interview with the guitar player talking about how they sometimes use a toy laser gun right into their pickups to manipulate the sound of martians attacking les pauls. Whatever they used its one of the coolest effects i've heard to this day, and well executed.

This song soars into a stoner metal vibe in the middle, with screaming vocals and drop tuned riffage. This is one big Cave In sandwich if you really analyze it. The two slices of bread are all of the space rock textures and melody, while in between you have the big hunk of beef and cheese to really bring out the song. I'd have to say the bread is my favorite part of any sandwich, and true nonetheless in this analogy. I really can't describe it, but the guitar leads and melody at the end is some of the best work that they have ever done.

This song was recently released on a compilation record, Anomalies Vol. 1. This compilation was only released on vinyl and features unreleased material as well as heavily altered Black Sabbath, Bad Brains, and the Cure covers. If you consider yourself a Cave In fan, then don't sleep on this.

Buy Anomalies Vol. 1 via Hydra Head Records.

RECORDS REVISITED: SUGAR - BEASTER (1993)

Recently I stopped by one of my favorite record stores just to browse around and kill some time. Whenever I go in with a plan to find a gem, or something specific that I have been wanting I never end up finding anything. So, I thought that I would better my luck by going into Angry Mom Records in search of nothing. After pondering through stacks of used and new records this record just popped right up was immediately brushed aside for no one else to grab. At a first glance I thought that maybe I had just found a reissue as many of their albums from their discography have been repressed lately. But, this wasn't. In fact it was an original press on UK label Creation Records.  I was shocked at my find, and even more stunned by the price tag of nine dollars. I did what any record nerd would do and look at the condition and the insert to see if maybe it was a bootleg, and much to my luck it wasn't. I don't look for records simply based on what they are potentially worth o...

7 QUESTIONS WITH EVAN WEISS (INTO IT OVER IT, SAOTW, PET SYMMETRY, T/T/T)

I met Evan a over a year ago when we did the Glamour Kills tour with him. At that time he was doing his thing on acoustic, but since then Into It Over It has done some full band tours. Always loved his records and his guitar playing, very intricate and precise. Evan and I both have custom telecaster handmade by my good friend Chris at JR Custom Guitars. I turned Evan onto them when mine was finished he got immediately got one made by Chris.  http://intoitoverit.com What is your current setup? (Guitars, bass, amps, pedals, strings, picks, etc...) Depends on which band we are talking about! For IIOI / SAOTW, I use two custom "Telecaster" guitars through a modded Sovtek Mig100 and ported Ampeg V2 guitar cab. There is a similar setup for Josh who also plays in IIOI, with a Sovtek Mig100B and second ported V2. I only use a tuner. These are setups that are unique but sound outrageous. I like having something one of a kind and weird. Not to mention symme...

DAN YEMIN (PAINT IT BLACK, KID DYNAMITE, LIFETIME)

I did this interview via email with Dan a few years back now for an old zine I was doing. Needless to say it was never published. I've managed to take out a couple of questions that were outdated. What is posted below are the more relative parts of the interview. A lot of the questions were based around Paint it Black as they are his more recent band I figured he would want to talk about that more. Dan was a great guy and a pleasure to communicate with. He even asked for a copy of my zine when it was done. That zine as you can probably guess was never printed. I bet its time for me to print up a special one just for him.  I figured I would change it up on this interview and work backwards, so here it goes. Recently PIB put out two 7” EP’s on two different labels (Fat Wreck Chords, Bridge 9) what made you decide to do that? We just thought it was time to start switching up the way we do things. When you’ve been making music for a long time its easy to g...
