FEED - HUMAN ENGINE (2006-2009) FFO: FAILURE, HELMET & THE MELVINS

FEED was (is?) a band from San Antonio Texas that I believe is comprised of members from local metal/hardcore bands like Iron Age (and possibly a few others from that scene). However, I am not 100% sure on the band's origins. There is not too much info about these guys that I can find anymore. I was turned onto FEED by a buddy of mine. Being into a lot of the bands coming out of Texas at the time (i.e. Iron Age, Power Trip, Bitter End, Mammoth Grinder etc..) it was pretty certain that this record would be up my alley, and surely it was.

FEED is not a crossover metal/hardcore band. However, more or so in the vein of Helmet, Alice in Chains, and Failure. When I first received this release it was only a 4 song EP with tracks 7-10 on it. Above is a collection of demo tracks and the 4 song Human Engine EP. The EP is some of my personal favorites. However, I have been into a lot of the demo songs lately as they remind me of early Helmet, and the Melvins. This discography was put together in 2009. The only proper release that I know of was the EP on cassette.  I am hoping that someday someone will release this record on vinyl.

As I was getting to the link to download this record I came across another album that they released in 2012. I had no idea that these guys were still together and recording stuff, but apparently they are. Anyways, if you like what you hear on Human Engine, check out Thigpen. You won't be disappointed. You can purchase the new full length on cassette via Tedium Medium.

7 QUESTIONS WITH EVAN WEISS (INTO IT OVER IT, SAOTW, PET SYMMETRY, T/T/T)

I met Evan a over a year ago when we did the Glamour Kills tour with him. At that time he was doing his thing on acoustic, but since then Into It Over It has done some full band tours. Always loved his records and his guitar playing, very intricate and precise. Evan and I both have custom telecaster handmade by my good friend Chris at JR Custom Guitars. I turned Evan onto them when mine was finished he got immediately got one made by Chris.  http://intoitoverit.com What is your current setup? (Guitars, bass, amps, pedals, strings, picks, etc...) Depends on which band we are talking about! For IIOI / SAOTW, I use two custom "Telecaster" guitars through a modded Sovtek Mig100 and ported Ampeg V2 guitar cab. There is a similar setup for Josh who also plays in IIOI, with a Sovtek Mig100B and second ported V2. I only use a tuner. These are setups that are unique but sound outrageous. I like having something one of a kind and weird. Not to mention symme...

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - TROY VAN LEEUWIN'S RIG RUNDOWN

Premier Guitar just recently put together a Rig Rundown of Troy Van Leeuwen's guitar rig. Troy is a huge part of their sound a very influential guitarist. He's one of my personal favorites. His unique style has been a very integral part of the band's sound since he joined the band. Not only does he play guitar but he also uses a lapsteel in a non traditional sense for noises and other effects, as well as percussion. Unlike Troy, Josh Homme is never one to publicly talk about what he uses on stage. Troy's rig consists of three main guitars - an Echopark T- style, his signature Fender Jazzmaster with a Mastery Bridge, and a Burns 12 string (not shown.) He plays through two Vox AC30s, a combo and a head driving Vox and Marshall cabs. Effects: Van Leeuwen's main QOTSA pedalboard has a Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro MIDI controller, a Custom Audio Electronics tap-tempo switch (for his Axe-Fx II, which is primarily used for reverb and delay), a Mo...

DAN YEMIN (PAINT IT BLACK, KID DYNAMITE, LIFETIME)

I did this interview via email with Dan a few years back now for an old zine I was doing. Needless to say it was never published. I've managed to take out a couple of questions that were outdated. What is posted below are the more relative parts of the interview. A lot of the questions were based around Paint it Black as they are his more recent band I figured he would want to talk about that more. Dan was a great guy and a pleasure to communicate with. He even asked for a copy of my zine when it was done. That zine as you can probably guess was never printed. I bet its time for me to print up a special one just for him.  I figured I would change it up on this interview and work backwards, so here it goes. Recently PIB put out two 7” EP’s on two different labels (Fat Wreck Chords, Bridge 9) what made you decide to do that? We just thought it was time to start switching up the way we do things. When you’ve been making music for a long time its easy to g...
